Happy New Year Mark,

We are really enjoying our front landscape and get tons of compliments on it. I'm ready for spring and the grass to get green again!

Thank you so much for the beautiful poinsettia at the holidays. It was much appreciated.

Subject: Southern Vistas

I am pleased to write a few comments on Southern Vistas. Three years ago my wife and I were scheduled to move into our third house in Spring Valley. The house was 30 years old and we were remodeling. I also wanted to completely redo the landscaping to give it a more tropical look consistent with the architecture. We completely removed all the old pine trees and overgrown bushes and started from scratch.

I originally contracted with another landscape architect but we had
differing views of what I thought was appropriate. Running short of time
before we moved in, I sought recommendations for other architects.
Fortunately I was referred to Southern Vistas. I met with Mark and 3 days later we had a blueprint of the landscaping he proposed for the front, rear and sides of the property. I contracted with them and never regretted the decision. For the next five weeks, there was a crew on site everyday. Bulldozers and trucks filled with dirt transformed
the topography of the yard. Irrigation was laid out. Beautiful stone
walkways were next. After three weeks the plant material began arriving
daily in trucks and each night I when went by the house we grew more
excited as the landscape came alive. Cars stopped to look and talk with us about what they saw.  Golfers engaged us in conversation as to what was being developed.

In the final days as the mulch was spread, it was clear we had a yard that not only were we going to enjoy and be proud of every day, but everyone who saw it from the golf course , street or through a visit was going to appreciate it as well.

Southern Vistas was also very strong in it's follow-up and was on site
whenever needed even replacing a few of the shrubs a year later after winter took it's toll.  Southern Vistas work was so extraordinary that Columbia Green chose our home to be on it's annual garden tour for 2010 - a yard only 3 years old.

Last fall, we approached Mark about putting in a swimming pool in our side yard. When we met, we gave him a general idea about what we wanted, and he quickly came up with an ambitious but beautiful design.

Mark then took care of getting approvals from the city and making sure everything was zoned correctly. During the installation of the pool, Mark made the decisions we needed to make an easy and painless process. When we changed our minds (as happens during all projects), Mark took it all in stride. Considering all the rain Columbia had in the fall and
winter of 2009, we were very pleased with how quickly the pool was finished. The yard was quickly cleaned up as well (no odd tools and discarded items littering the site!). The crew cleaned up as they went so the yard never was littered with trash.

Upon completion, our pool is more beautiful than we imagined it, and Mark brought a level of artistry, attention to detail, and all around class to the project. We couldn’t be happier with our pool, and everyone we have shown it to loves it. Our
pool reflects our personalities and vision and Mark helped create the reality. For the first time, we look forward to Columbia summers. We cannot recommend Mark highly enough!

Dear Mark,

I’d like to thank you for the beautiful back yard you gave me last week. I’ve sent before-and-after photos of it to my friends and they were ecstatic, as am I. They said the following:

1. ”What a great and beautiful transformation! I know you must be enormously pleased with it. You must have had a great landscaper. It's really a lovely, tranquil spot that will be a tranquil place to pause and just enjoy being there.”

2. “Couldn't believe my eyes! I just marveled at how you would comfortably sit in that new deck, your mind slowly relaxing and your eyes wandering for hours through the changing beauty of nature.”

3. “The garden is full of soul!”

4. “Wow, Fausto, that is wonderful. And so Southern . . . . A cheerer-upper! Now I feel like working on my yard.”

5. “Terrific. Two different worlds, the “before and after” pictures! The palm trees, the center lawn, it looks wonderful. Definitely gives a “beach” sensation.”

6. ”Congratulations. It really looks beautiful. What a change. You did a great job.”

All of this, Mark, was said by people with a great love of art, who have beautiful yards in North and South America.

I value how easy it was to have my desire of “a beach” behind the house understood by you. I could see in the way you were listening to me that you were taking what I wanted to a deep creative level, one with which I’m familiar as a poet, painter and photographer. When I visited your Garden Center, and saw the plants and had you illustrate for me which ones and how many you intended for creating “The Beach” effect, I knew I could trust your artistry entirely.

The execution of the project was a surprise: attentive, thorough, calm, and even responsive to what small observations I offered. Your crew was quick, able, friendly, well-mannered and so at ease with the transplanting work. The evening the palm trees first were up, I felt that the Egyptian pyramids surely had to be around the corner—I was transported. The next day, when the other plants were put in, I saw the first half of your beautiful design—what joy; the next morning, with the installation of a kidney-shaped lawn, I sat back on my deck and let the gorgeousness of it all come into me.

Thank you for “The Beach,” Mark. I wanted the effect after visiting Hunting Island and deciding that its palmetto groves were both sensual and stark and that I loved how they touched my spirit. You were able to reproduce them on my property, to my ample satisfaction, and for it I am beholding to you. When I went looking for a landscaper, a friend told me unequivocally that you were the best. Now I know what he was thinking, when he said it.

Thank you, Mark, and very best wishes. You’ve made a friend.

Yours,

Faust Pauluzzi
